Tandis que Hampton affûte son talent pour la politique, il tombe amoureux de sa camarade révolutionnaire Deborah Johnson Dominique Fishback. La Bande-Annonce Notre critique Bien qu'un peu long, le biopic du leader du Black Panther Party BPP "Judas and the Black Messiah" a le mérite de nous rappeler l'histoire et la nature de ce mouvement. Ce film met en lumière la frange de Chicago du BPP, dont le leader local est le jeune Fred Hampton, brillamment interprété par Daniel Kaluuya. Un mouvement bien plus large que la politique et les seules revendications de droits civiques, qui veut aider le peuple. Mais un mouvement qui s'est aussi montré violent, où tout le monde avait des flingues. Une violence qui ne pouvait qu'être puisque Hampton a souhaité s'allier avec toutes les communautés et les gangs de la ville. Mort à seulement 21 ans tué dans son sommeil par la police il avait déjà été emprisonné. Un enfermement qui n'avait fait que renforcer ses convictions à sa sortie il est encore plus habité pendant ses discours, complètement galvanisé par son art oratoire, scandant "Je suis un révolutionnaire". Avec ses yeux très grands ouverts, Daniel Kaluuya semble si habité par son rôle, qu'il en devient parfois effrayant. Shaka King utilise avec parcimonie et intelligence des images d'archives, notamment l'interview de William O'Neal, l'indic' des flics. Le réalisateur choisit aussi, à la fin, de préciser l'issue de l'histoire pour les personnages principaux. Un choix judicieux qu'on apprécie. La sortie de "Judas and the Black Messiah" tombe à point nommé, quelques jours après que le policier Derek Chauvin soit reconnu coupable de la mort de George Floyd. Tout un symbole presque.
